P0gman: Riddim Dubstep SoundsPosted on 05th December 2023
The US-based British Dubstep producer, P0gman, has been a well-established name in the Dubstep scene for more than 10 years. Known for his signature flow and ‘wobbly’ style, he has performed around the globe on numerous tours, and many of his tracks have been released by some of the larger Dubstep labels.
How did you get into music production?
I got into music production after hearing Dubstep for the first time around 2006/7. I had always been into music and was part of a band for many years. As I grew older and wanted to explore music as more of a solo project, that’s when I decided to produce. I started on Reason for maybe 1 or 2 songs and then moved to FL. I finally settled on Logic and have used it for the last 13 years. I gradually progressed and managed to start making stuff worthy of being released. I went on to release with many successful labels including Never Say Die, Disciple, Dim Mak, Uplink and Rude Service just to name a few.
Which Devious Machines plug-in do you enjoy most at the moment – and how do you often use it?
The plugin I am enjoying most right now is Texture. Being able to add slight textures and sounds to already existing synths makes sound design so much easier. I love that you can stick a sound to every transient on something without having to completely modify the original synth underneath. Using texture seems like ‘putting the cherry on top’ to me. When your sound is missing that one little thing than its Texture to the rescue.
What production tips can you offer our readers?
Don’t be scared to experiment as much as you want. I feel like when we want to pursue a certain path we get very boxed in. Try things that are not classed as ‘normal’ and also spend time just producing for fun. Not every song has to be your next release or the next ‘big thing’. Enjoying and learning at the same time is key.
Tell us a bit about how you created the sample pack?
I made this sample pack in mind of what I would have wanted when I was starting out. I wanted to add sounds that could work in multiple situations. This is most definitely a ‘Dubstep’ sample pack but it will 100% work in other genres too. I loved working with and around some of the Devious Machines plugins to create what you guys are gonna get.
What’s on Pogman’s horizon in 2024?
I have just recently moved to the US full time so I plan on releasing as much music as possible in 2024 and getting back on the road with some gigs and tours. I plan to also release my side project I have been sitting on for a while, so keep your eyes peeled.
What music is (or which artists are) particularly exciting you at the moment?
I am really enjoying deeper forward thinking stuff at the moment. I feel like I have gone full circle and am really enjoying stuff closer to what I was a fan of back in 2006/7. Some artists I really enjoy right now are Ternion Sound, Distinct Motive, Bukez Finezt and Enigma Dubs.
For anyone unaware of POgman, which track do you think most represents your sound?
I would say Stacks is maybe fully what P0gman is and what I want it to be. Full flowing, dark vibes and head nodding. Dubstep the way I originally fell in love with it 🙂
